Jonas Bula is developing a product idea that combines 3D design, artificial intelligence, and computer aided manufacturing. The system is built around two personas and their user journeys. For furniture designers, it would eventually allow them to turn their designs into customisable models. For consumers, it would create a flow where they can capture their space, their context, and their intentions, select a piece of furniture from a designer, and then customise it to suit their space precisely. Jonas has always been drawn to furniture design and woodwork, but his career took him into technology and product development. He has had more time recently to explore the connection between the two and has now reached a point where he believes the idea can become a viable product.

He has been at Contact for about a month. What he values most is the breadth of tools available and the support he has received in entering a field where he has very little prior experience. Rutger, the makerspace manager, has been particularly generous in sharing his knowledge and teaching him how to use new machines and programs.

At the moment he is working on an end-to-end proof of concept, covering everything from a consumer-facing app to converting a customised model into something the CNC machine can read and physically produce.

The inspiration behind the work is largely based on practical need. Amsterdam's family apartments tend to be small, and Jonas is driven by the need for furniture that is both aesthetic and functional within those constraints.

One project from outside this work that stands out to him, was a system designed to allow local accommodation providers to offer experiences directly to their guests. This project was meaning full in that it was a project based on bringing people together.
