Louise van der Veld
Painter

Louise is a painter whose artistic journey has gone through many different stages. She attended art school a few times in her younger years focusing on different practices, which also included studying textiles. She paused her practice for some time to focus on raising her children. Later, she moved to Paris, where she started worked as an art teacher. Returning to Amsterdam, she taught high school art before deciding to leave teaching behind and focus on her own creative path.

She joined Contact in September and loves having her own dedicated space and inspiring environment. Louise is eager to connect with more people, collaborate, and continue learning in this dynamic community.

Her work focuses on large-scale paintings, often exploring themes of death as a way of piecing together ideas that others might not. She collects imagery and objects that inspire her, triggering enthusiasm and ideas she projects onto the canvas. Through layers of paint, she blends her thoughts, emotions, and struggles, aiming to create something that resonates with viewers.

Louise draws inspiration from a collection of darker imagery—often tied to themes of death, history, people, and dreams. She enjoys imagining stories for strangers and weaving her own frustrations and interests into her art.

One of her works that stands out to her is a winning design she made during her time at art school. The winning piece, a bird-shaped smoke detector that mimicked the call of a chickadee, highlighted her ability to merge creativity with functionality. The chickadee’s warning calls, tied to danger, offered a poetic connection to safety and alertness.
