At Contact, Marijn focuses on furniture making using traditional woodworking techniques and hand tools. Alongside this, she works as a sculptural artist and drafts architectural projects. Woodworking is a relatively new pursuit for her, having started two summers ago after completing a one-month course in the UK. Since then, she has been teaching herself and taking additional courses, steadily evolving her craft into more than just a hobby.
She joined Contact last February, nearly a year ago, drawn by the maker-space and its extensive array of tools and machines. She also really appreciates the supportive community. Many others in the space also work with wood and make furniture, providing her with valuable advice and inspiration as someone newer to the practice. The generosity of the community—sharing tools and expertise—has been particularly meaningful to her.
Currently, Marijn is working on two lazy chairs made of ash wood, a material she finds approachable and rewarding to work with. The chairs will feature woven seating and backs made of Danish cord, combining functionality with an artisanal touch.
She finds great inspiration in the practice of traditional woodworking, especially in connecting with the material. To her, wood has its own voice, with patterns and knots that guide her creative process. Her work enhances these natural features while respecting the material's inherent limitations.
One of her proudest achievements is completing her first major project, a console table for a hallway, which she also sold. This milestone taught her a great deal and marked an exciting step forward in her woodworking journey.
